Your tires do a lot more than keep your car moving—they’re essential to your safety, fuel efficiency, and vehicle performance. Along with your brakes, your tires are one of the most critical components of your car, and keeping them in top condition helps protect you and everyone else on the road.

At Big T Tire & Automotive, we recommend making tire safety checks part of your regular maintenance routine. Before long trips—or at least once a month—take a few minutes to inspect your tires using this simple checklist.

  1. Check Tread Depth

Adequate tread depth is what gives your tires grip and stability on the road. Worn tread can lead to longer stopping distances and reduced traction in wet or slippery conditions.

A quick way to check is with the penny test: insert a penny into your tire’s grooves with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is below 2/32 of an inch—it’s time for new tires.

  1. Monitor Tire Pressure

Proper air pressure keeps your tires performing their best and helps avoid blowouts. Underinflated tires can cause poor handling and decreased fuel efficiency, while overinflated tires wear unevenly and can reduce traction.

Check your tire pressure at least once a month when your tires are cold, and compare the reading to your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended PSI (usually listed on a sticker inside the driver’s door).

  1. Keep Up with Rotations, Balancing & Alignment

Rotating, balancing, and aligning your tires regularly helps them wear evenly and extends their life. If you notice vibrations, uneven tread, or your vehicle pulling to one side, it’s time to have your alignment or balance checked.

Following your vehicle’s maintenance schedule for these services ensures smoother rides, better fuel economy, and safer handling.

  1. Inspect for Damage and Wear

Your tires face constant exposure to road hazards—so it’s important to check them often for visible damage. Look for:

  • Cracks, cuts, or bulges
  • Uneven tread wear
  • Nails, rocks, or other debris lodged in the rubber

If you spot anything unusual, have a professional inspect your tires right away.
